The sum of $29,7.r0 was paid into the Treasury on Saturday to meet the No vember interest on the first mortgage bonds issued by the State in 1875 for the purchase of the Western North Carolina Railroad. The Treasurer will proiptly'pay the November coupons on presentation. Since the sale of the road to November 1st the State has saved on interest account alone $34,70S.33. The annual saving to the State on interest account is 59,500, which, at maturity of bond3 in 1890 will be about $600,000. These, figures are from the Treasury books. X. Challengers and Canvassers. The Fire Last Stent The alarm of fire last night, about 9:30 o'clock, was caused by the burning of some small houses on premises on Fourth street, just north of Castle, Both houses were occupied; one of. them was destroyed and the other was saved with a damaged roof, though the exer tions of the Fire Department. The fire was accidental. The houses .belonged to the estate of tho late Mrs. Melinda Howell and the loss is about 400. The Tax Fnnd. The Sheriff turned over on Friday last the following additional amount to the County Treasurer: S2.G43.57. More Fraud The report comes to U3 that the - pa triotic colored American citizens of African descent who inhabit Easy Hill and Meares Bluff, Brnnswickcounty have lent their countenance and names to the Republicans of the First Ward and expect to-morrow to push in their votes.
